Steve Rowlands was educated at Grey High School in Port Elizabeth and matriculated in 1982. After military service Steve began working with Enterprise Foods as a receiving clerk and within 4 months Steve was promoted to regional warehouse supervisor until September 1988 at which point he was transferred up to Johannesburg as a sales representative.
During his time at Enterprise Foods, one of the duties with which Steve was charged was managing damages within his allocated area. At this point the issue of waste became clear to Steve and was an enormous concern for him. Negative business practices were exacerbating the problem and this was highlighted one day when Steve was instructed to write of more than a ton of chicken that was left to rot as a result off an unresolved pricing dispute between retailer and manufacturer.
Upon leaving the store Steve came across a person with a cardboard placard pleading for food to feed his starving children. It was at this point Steve resolved to find a business solution to combat reverse logistics, waste and abuse.
In 1994 Rowlands–Pearse was born.
